Corten steel beds are environmentally safe and beneficial to plants. It contains iron that leaches into the soil, promoting the development of chlorophyll in plants, which means healthy harvests for you. Corten steel is allowed to rust in order to form the protective patina coating. However. the rust does not rub off of corten steel. Generally, Corten steel will develop the patina within six months of exposure to the atmosphere. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that develops, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.
