KASUMI
Owner and Founder
Welcome to GARDNSCAPE! My name is Kasumi. I moved to the United States from Japan in 2005; my background is colorful. I was born in Laos, but my parents are are Chinese and French. After a brief stint in Thailand, my family settled in Japan. As a result of my multicultural upbringing, I speak Laotian, Thai, Japanese and now English.
Ever since I was little, my family has had always had a garden, and we always balanced it naturally using chickens and other natural methods to amendment and keep the garden healthy. Gardening has always been a rewarding part of my life.
I have also always enjoyed the creative aspect of art, which is what lead me to get into hair creation and design for my first career. I moved to Los Angeles, where I worked in the hair and makeup industry in Hollywood. It was a great experience to be a part of the creative world of that industry: TV sets, runways, music videos, and magazines.
After that, for family reasons, I moved to Columbia, Missouri. There I purchased my first home, and I immediately got back into gardening so that I could hopefully build those same fond memories with my own children. I became obsessed with plants again; I had forgotten how much I enjoyed being in the garden. This is where I also first got into edible landscaping. I tore-up my front yard and turned the entire front yard into edible landscaping. I had no idea how much my actions would touch and inspire so many of my neighbors. Many people who drove or walked by my house would stop and give me compliments; asking how I did everything. Soon afterwards, the whole neighborhood started to ask me to help them do similar things. I started to realize that I enjoy helping other people with their gardens just as much as I enjoy working in my own. I also love the challenge of creating something new and beautiful with someone else’s dream in mind.
We have moved several times over the past 10 years, but no matter where we were and when we moved, I would work with the seasons and my garden space to create something special. Each time was a new and different challenge, but we have finally settled here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Now I want to share my love of creating a beautiful garden space with everyone. My mission is to inspire as many people as I can to grow their own food and share the joy that I get when harvesting my own food. It’s so much more than just having a garden.
